Ecotricity

ecotricity logoEcotricity have been offering renewably sourced electricity since 1996, making them one of the UK’s earliest green energy suppliers. They number the Body Shop and the Co-operative Bank amongst their customers, and are recommended by the Worldwide Fund for Nature, the Soil Association and Cornwall’s own Surfers against Sewage.

Ecotricity originally sourced their power from what they call ‘pale green’ sources, including sewage, landfill gas and biomass, which helped to kick-start the UK’s green energy market. Today the company uses only ‘deep green’ sources - mostly wind energy (much of it from wind-farms that Ecotricity has built in England and Scotland) but also solar power and hydro-electricity.

The company offers two tariffs:

If you opt for the New Energy tariff, Ecotricity promise to match the price of your regional electricity supplier. They’ll drop their prices if your regional supplier does, but aim not to raise prices along with them unless absolutely necessary.

If you decide to switch to Ecotricity, the company will also plant a tree for you in a forest near one of their wind farms in Gloucestershire.
